Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson tells us what astonishes him most about our universe: that the atoms comprising our bodies are literally made of star-dust. “So that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us,” he says. “There is a level of connectivity” – which is what most of us want in life: to feel connected, relevant.

When I moved to Costa Rica to start up my new nonprofit organization, I planned to create an after school program to help kids with homework, learn English and do some environmental education. This endeavor turned into much more than I ever could have imagined. From being a mentor to a counselor to a big sister and most importantly, a friend, these kids need so much more than just a teacher. The big issues they face at such a young age range from sexual abuse to extreme poverty. We work to help them keep their precious childhood alive by taking them on field trips to the beach, hiking, surfing and make short videos to share each magical experience. We connect with other schools internationally through Skype conversations and host workshops to help them gain life skills. We are “Forjando Alas” AKA “Building Wings”. Please check us out on Facebook and like us. Our larger organization, “Kids’ Foundation for Uniting Nations” (AKA Kids’ F.U.N.) connects children around the world through electronic media, shared service learning projects and the creation of community centers. Please visit “Kids’ FUN” on Facebook.

At this very moment my granny asked me to iron and to do the washing as she wasn’t able to do it herself because of her heart condition. How could I say “No” to my lovely grandma? I did everything she asked me. Then I was happy to see my granny in a good mood.

There was an event that took place with me and my friends. We were walking in the park, an old man was ahead – he was going very very slowly and suddenly he fell down. Then it turned out that he didn’t have his medicine with him. We lifted him and stayed there until the ambulance came. There were other children in the park but to my surprise they didn’t pay attention at this man. They said that it was all the same for them. I was terrified how indifferent to other people’s problems they were. Then we went to hospital and visited our old man. He was glad to see us.

In summer when I was going to the knitting class my mother asked me to do shopping. On the way to the shop I saw an old woman who had heavy bags in her hands. She was so tired that couldn’t go further. I helped her to carry her bags to her house. The woman thanked me a lot and even gave me an apple. Then I bought bread and vegetables for my mummy and started running to my class. I was late a little but my teacher said that I made a good deed. I was happy.

As I was sitting down with my family at a resteraunt for dinner; everything was going great and we were all getting along for once. When the bill came for dinner the lady kindly stated that it had already been paid for. My father wanted to investigate further and asked the waitress who had paid for it. She points out a man sitting alone in the corner. My dad wanted to do the right thing by thanking him. When my dad asked him why he had done it the man said genuinely that we had a wonderful family and he had been watching us from afar all night, admiring us. In that moment I felt that there are always people watching no matter what and that you are never alone. I also felt the pure kindness of people’s hearts even when they don’t have to.

I was about to walk into McDonald’s, when I noticed an old couple in front of me holding hands and walking towards the door. I sped up so that I could walk past them and get to the door first. The old woman’s face lit up with genuine surprise and appreciation when she realized that I had gotten in front of them so that I hold the door open. With the biggest smile on her face, the woman looked me in the eyes and said, ”I haven’t seen that in years! It’s so wonderful to see nice young people with manners and respect. Thank you so much!”

The other day me and my daddy were walking into a restaurant, and saw these older women coming out. My daddy jogged over to hold the door for them, and just seeing the grins on their faces brightened my day. They carried on cracking jokes with us, and it just gave me the happiest feeling to see them laughing and carrying on. I learned from this experience that just a small deed and a nice comment can really brighten someone’s day. Elderly people enjoy these little things so much, and it can really make their day.
