Last winter my car slid round a corner and ended up in a ditch, canted at a 45 degree angle. I kicked open the door and managed to get myself out, shaken but unhurt. Fortunately I had my mobile phone with me, and was able to phone the local breakdown service. Here is the magical moment bit: while I was waiting for the breakdown guy to come, twelve cars went past, and twelve cars stopped to ask whether I was OK and whether they could do anything to help. It was heartwarming, and restored my faith in human kindness.
